Day 1 - The group enjoyed a beautiful day with a bus tour of the major sites of Kyoto.  Pictured here a the world heritage Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

The tour guide for the day was fantastic and had a great sense of humour - she was a hit with the girls!  Everyone is travelling well so far with all the girls being co-operative and helpful.

Good Fortune!
The girls ensuring they have good health and good fortune.

A highlight of the day was the many beautiful gardens that surround the temples and castles.  Saloni and Maddyson are pictured in front of one of the many ponds.

Stepping Stones!

Nijo Castle was built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period.  After the Tokugawa Shogunate fell in 1867, Nijo Castle was used as an imperial palace for a while before being donated to the city and opened up to the public as a historic site.  The entire castle grounds and the Honmaru are surrounded by stone walls and moats.
After the group enjoyed a wonderful Italian lunch (yes you read that correctly - Italian) the group visited Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion).  Jessie & Ruby (above) pictured with the temple in the background.  Kinkakuji is a Zen temple in northern Kyoto whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf.

A perfect end the the first day in Kyoto.  Mrs Aitchison & Mrs Pawsey make new friends with Japanese Primary School students who took the opportunity to practice their English skills.
